St. Mary, MT, is located just outside the east entrance to Glacier National Park (http://www.nps.gov/glac). As we’ve mentioned before, each time we think we’ve seen the most beautiful and amazing place, around the corner is something even more beautiful and amazing. Glacier NP has proven to be the absolute best we have seen in our two years of traveling. All we can say is that it is breathtakingly beautiful. We hiked a couple short, easy trails, picnicked beside a river, drove the Going-to-the-Sun Road across the Continental Divide, and marveled at the melting snow cascading down hillsides in beautiful waterfalls. The road had just opened the day before we arrived as the snow had prevented it opening any earlier. At Logan’s Pass we reached a new height of 6,646 feet and stood in the snow. We saw mountain goats and bighorn sheep not only in the high cliffs but also on the road and trail in front of us. And still we did not see the entire park. All the books you could ever read on Glacier, all the words we could ever say, nor could viewing all the nearly 2,000 photos we took while there ever truly capture this incredible place. So we will say no more, enjoy the pictures, and get out to Montana and see this place for yourself.
